More thoughtful stuff from Zondervan

Neither our natural dispositions nor the contemporary environment is conducive to the cultivation of the spiritual life. Thus discipline becomes so important—the business of firmly resisting and restraining these powerful negative forces in our lives. As Dallas Willard forcefully insists, "Grace is not opposed to effort; it is opposed to earning."

It is true that our salvation can never be earned. But too many have mistakenly assumed that because grace is free, no exertion is required of us to live the Christian life. This is simply untrue. We are called to participate with all our hearts in the purposes of God for us and the world.
